Okay, I gotta stop trying to be humorous in these things, there's simply no sugar-coating material that consumes a part of my day for no apparent reason.
This is a beautiful stream of conscious piece that takes us absolutely nowhere. I sat on the edge of my seat at the start, thinking how gorgeous this looked, how it conjured echoes of films such as "Witness" and "Days of Heaven". How the soundtrack meshes with the opening visuals is surely the most ... um ... striking thing about this piece. Beyond that, however - please tell me what I'm seeing. "I'm complicated" as a statement opens a door into a realm of whimsy. The movie takes a step into that and then proceeds to waste our time. I'm certain there is nothing within this piece to understand - it's a ... statement. By the end of it I'm thinking, So?
There's no doubt that this is a finely craftd bit of fairy floss - just look at the beautiful attention to detail in some of the frames. As a movie, it's a high-school recess exvursion with the AV department's equipment by a 15 year old girl and her mates. (Oh god, I Know I'm going to hell for that - but, Dulci, I want my 5 minutes back.) »
«First off the opening is just gorgeous. Wonderful voice acting as to be expected from the top notch actors. Liked the music I think it fit well. I don't really understand the story ok she's a complication but why and how? Aside from the sometimes akward character movements the movie had a great look about it. Wish I could have understood this better. Good work none the less. »
«This movie was one of the most difficult to understand for me, both as a filmaker and part of the audience....It is that complicated. The visuals are just stunning, music is dreamy and completely right for this movie. The voice acting is .....so right, just spot on. Complicated dialog/tone/underlaying atmosphere. The titlle says it all. My initial reaction to the whole situation was one of hanger and frustration. That in itself is an amazing thing because i never thaught a machinima movie could actualy get me in that mood. You have suceeded in getting a reaction where so many films have missed. That is a powerfull story-telling ability.
There where a few distractions: The animation was very ''robotic'' in some scenes. The whole sound shifting from left to right during the opening dialog was jarring at first and made me check my headphones. If it had been a bit slower, it would have fitted the dream-like quality of the field scene..
But then, its another complication....that term keeps coming back to mind as i review this film...it's frustrating. I keep getting the feeling of being played around, witch is what i think A_N_D'S character must have felt.
Again, it is a testament to your story-telling ability. »
«The imagery at the beginning is what stood out for me in this, a soft breeze slowly rustling the grass as Dulci's character reflects on her 'Complications'. A very interesting film indeed, short films are definitely your forte and they always prove to be fascinating. Nice voice acting from A_N_D (nice to see him, haven't seen him in one for a while ) and some good work from you Dulci too.
I liked the nice tranquil music, fitted in very well, well done to Rik and the dialogue was well written also. Overall a nice little film which goes well with the rest of your short films with a message.
«best curtain line i've heard in years! it was pretty much what i was thinking, but i never thought a woman would have ended it that way. so, extra credit for being able to think like a man. watch this one full screen, the visual look of it is stunning. and the credits are very professional.
now the movie. it's a chick flick (except for the end, which was very funny, even if it wasn't meant to be.) i'm not the right person to review a chick flick, but this one, thankfully was short enough not to cause me to cringe too much. the point here is that sometimes people just can't say what they mean. and when they do say it, the person who hears it takes it the wrong way anyway. like the led zep song: communication breakdown. perfect voicework. who would expect any less from these two heavy-weights. music was effective and again, professionally done. another heavy-weight. and really, a perfect script.
«The visuals were really good, very artistic. Poor Girl trying to explain to a man what she wants without actually saying what she wants, what chance does the poor guy have
Great vocals and visuals, a really impressive short.»
The Good: The voice acting of you and AND was superb. The music was mystical and playfully elegant. The dialog (storyline) was well written.
The Bad: the scene in the field: the grass and flowers were swaying in the breeze but her hair was stiff, unmoving.
Overall: After watching this several times, (being a guy) the overall message effect was somewhat lost on me. Or was it just that she couldn't make him (and me) understand what she truly wants? Definetely a film that makes you think.»
«That... was great! I'm really honored to have my song in your movie. The first part is so mesmerizing, faëric(?) , no ther scene could've more be in harmony with this song. Incredible. Also liked how you got back to reality. Complication. Great dialog, somehow tense, but like a thought, a breeze... where's the dream really...?
«Visually absolutely beautiful, love the music and the subtle sounds! I've watched this three or four times - you and A_N_D did great on the vo's, and as I know you always aim to touch the feelings of your viewers, you succeeded very much in touching mine - but not necessarily in the way you wanted to touch - I'll try to explain - the moment Maggie starts talking, I start rolling my eyes - every time I watch this. Why on earth doesn't she say what she means, or wants?? No wonder he doesn't get it. I get as exasperated with her as he gets... I feel she doesn't really want it to be over - she wants to get a certain reaction from him and doesn't get it - it's a dangerous play that will never succeed because men just don't think like that (and I have no idea why women never seem to learn, and why there is a need to of playing these kind of games). Might just be me, though... »
That opening sequence was gorgeous, and what followed was a little sad, a little disturbing, and a little too familiar. In other words, very very fine.
I love acting across from you, too. My voice is yours, and you know it.
«Hmm, what to say. First off is I really liked it. Rik's understated music and some really nice sound (traffic panning) were exemplary.
I'm still struggling to "get it" though, after three views (all the HD download from Vimeo... gorgeous)
Complications, (sorry!) bookended by such simplicity in the OB shots. I'm hoping that's intentional? If not, it's what I got from it.
My only gripe is that you used the title word too often; it had the feeling of beating over the head with the meaning. Say a word too often and it becomes just noise. Maybe that's just me!
Mind you, lots of people taking different things from a six minute film can only mean it worked I think.»
«Nicely put together. Liked the, how to say, "smallness?" of the character movements. Very subtle, that adds to the feel of the piece to me. Would have liked it to have been longer. »
«The first half is an audio visual trip. How crisp are those flowers? Lovely shots with the traveling petal. Rik's musical drones with flourishes works well under the eye candy intro. Shades of Charriots of Fire. The snap back to reality was very effective. Great voice work by the pair of you. A captivating flick.
«oved the intro fade into the red hair..very nice. Loved the plant life (still not sure how you executed that petal). Dialogue was great and I liked the whole setup and layout very much. Music = excellent. My gripe comes with the lady's movements which seemed underwater slow. Speed her up and send that man to the curb. Snap snap snap. You go girl. »
«Fabulous imagery coupled with a deep and mesmerising storytelling makes Complication one of my favourite shorts of all time. Your films always have the ability to draw a viewer into a world/scenario/moment that allows you to question things and this is no different.

You state your opinions as though they are fact, and that's not the right way act. Hey, that rhymes! »
«I'm going to be blunt here, Dulci, because that is the kind of person that I am - yet with discretion and rhetoric. It's a beautiful-looking film, but it's not necessarily a beautiful film. Witty and imaginative? Yeah. Original, thought-provoking and persuasive? Don't think so. It seems you have yourself in a rut here. You may have a style to making all of your films, but after this, it seems that the core theme and style blends together all too closely in relation to ALL OF YOUR PREVIOUS PROJECTS. I have to give this a 3/5. Heart-warming and heart-rending? Yes. Bound to set off an international dialogue - even just between this community? No. I'm not trying to be harsh here, but if you think that you're a perfect filmmaker, then you're not taking everyone's advice to heart. Again, beautiful music, visuals and character designs, but it really doesn't entertain. Every good story must have a compelling protagonist, a goal for them to achieve, and most importantly, an enemy that stands in strong opposition to them reaching it. To me, this film lacked all of them, especially the second. Was it a bad film? No. Does it kinda reinvent the wheel? Yup. Was it your worst film? Yes, in comparison to your other films, but that doesn't mean that they aren't of high caliber.»
«I have to say it's nice to see your productions done in iClone; it brings a different dimension to the types of films being produced at this time. Your deep thought out story lines, be it short in this piece, are well crafted and certainly stir emotions.
I see you are now using the motion editor to produce more unique animations which represent your style. Trust me, I know how difficult making these work is, so all credit to you for the fluid movement for some very difficult, tentative scenes.
All round well presented, produced and as always great VO's by yourself and AND.
Just one minor thing the VO level was slightly out during the second scene. I did find myself having to turn the volume up for “Maggie’s” lines but not for “Jim”. But like I said minor.
«The opening and closing shots were beautiful...nice cinematic scenes in the bedroom...there was a very mysterious quality about it. The music fit great with it! Excellent work, Dulci!»
«I had no idea iClone allowed such gorgeous shots--that floating petal was a grand effect. Then again, in the hands of a maestro (or is that maestrette?) I should've been prepared to be dazzled. I didn't quite get the meaning behind the dialogue, but by then I was so mesmerized by the opening sequence that I just went along for the ride. Rik did wonders with the music as well. »
«This was beautifully filmed piece of work, good enough in SD but absolutely gorgeous in HD. I could watch the opening sequence in the field of flowers again and again, such was it's dream-like quality and beauty.
The main scene in the bedroom showed what good actors you and AND are, although I wouldn't expect anything less, to be honest!
I also enjoyed Rik Vargard's music, which was well used and not overtly distracting. In other words it complemented what was on the screen.
Unfortunately, I do have a minor criticism. Well, more an observation actually. Now, having never done voice acting and never used iClone, I may be speaking out of turn here, but I found your voice a bit quiet and hard to hear (without turning the volume right up), at times, whereas AND I could hear quite clearly.
Having said that, it didn't detract from what is a wonderful piece of work and one which I shall enjoy watching many more times. »
«It was certainly well named:-) I loved the quick and sharp dialogue contained within the twisted logic. The beginning and end sequences were appropriate surreal bookends to the domestic scene. Rik's music was great.»
«Loved the flowers! A very intriguing sound design. I kept wondering what it meant. I have to admit the story was rather enigmatic for me. Both you and A_N_D were fantastic! »
«Wow, this was worth going to the TMU Theater to see. Where do I start? Visually absolutely stunning. Some of the scenes were truly beautiful to behold. One that stuck out for me was the camera following the petal floating on the wind towards the woman in the field. It was really emotionally powerful, sad in a way. The music was subtle and sparingly used, which made it all the more effective. It gave the scenes in the field a haunting feel. To be honest it creeped me out a little lol The VOs by you and A_N_D were top-notch as was to be expected. There was a great humanity about the acting which seemed very natural and convincing. Your sound design throughout was also outstanding, just overall a beautiful production. Camerawork was great, really captured the sad and almost sinister mood of the film perfectly. I loved the artsy, surprisingly dark tone the film took. Very nicely put together.
However, I did spot a couple of minor things that I was a little unsure about. Firstly, at the start where she is sitting in the field and she starts hearing the voices, I didn't really think the effect where the voices drifted between the right and left speakers worked all that well. Maybe it was just because I was wearing headphones but I thought there was something wrong with my headphones until I realised the effect was intentional. Now that almost took me right out of the mood, which isn't something I imagine you'd want your viewers to feel. I appreciate what you were trying to achieve with the effect, but for me it just didn't really work, sorry. Also (and this is a minor thing) I think the hand action where she tries to touch his hand and he pulls away was just a bit too slow for me to ignore, and it just seemed slightly robotic I'm afraid. However, neither of these things detracted from my viewing pleasure in the slightest.
Overall, this was just a beautiful piece of work. Although all other aspects were superb, the thing that stood out for me were the outstanding visuals. I know I keep saying beautiful but it is the only word I can use which I feel does this production justice. Just brilliant, brilliant work. Congrats Dulci on a fantastic film which I'll most definitely be adding to my favourites
«what can i say - top notch production, acting - camera angles, the moody opening scene were all outstanding - you've really mastered iclone in such a short period of time!»
