«Awesome flick! This reminds me of a Coen Brothers movie, but an 11 minute one. Love the many twists and turns it takes in such a short period. Great work!»
«For me, it takes a talented filmmaker to make a TM movie work these days (I know, I know, that makes ME a bit of an asshole in the TMU community these days when it comes to posting a critique)... I look for character, imagination, clever use of the limitations of the engine, story and how the filmmaker grabs you and hangs onto you. This is a narrative-driven piece with stock footage, yes, but it's how the stock is used and manipulated that makes this an absolute standout.
Great performances from all in a fine story that the stock can match - or is it the other way around?/ Anyway, this is a fun, noir tribute that is beautifully realised and very, very nicely done.
Five by five (......whatever that means....)
«I loved this film.
The only thing missing for me was some 'mood' lighting effects to go along with the noir feel of the narration. I don't know that there is a better line anywhere in film than..."Assholes like me don't get oscars...just bad karma." A classic.
I disagree with some of the commentators here about Lilys voice. I think it was pushed perfectly into the background, which is where the entire story took place. I'm thinking that she sounded exactly as Issac heard her, distant, in the background, important only for his gratification and not for her humanity. The graphics and sound both were playing a secondary role to Issacs ego. The entire story was by him and about him. Everyone and everything else were merely backdrops. Brilliantly executed in my opinion.
«Awesome! I loved the voice acting and script. The music fit really well and the camerawork flowed perfectly. As Robert says the pacing was the definite high point of the film. You were able to keep it interesting throughout and what could have ended up a fairly predictable story became intriguing through your clever editing.
I agree about the echo on Ana's voice but she was a fairly minor character so it wasn't a big issue. I sort of agree about the over-explaining thing but only slightly. I just thought there were one or two moments when he went a little over the top when driving a point home, such as when he was explaining that he was an asshole.
Overall though, a superb film which will surely do well in the Passion Competition. Best of luck! »
«Well, this was freaking awesome! Love the narration here, every line hits its target. Especially that last line... pure perfection. Add a fantastic actor in the form of Nile Zam Jones, and you have a clear winner. The pacing through this dark tale of revenge is top-notch as well, with excellent camera-work/direction/editing that doesn't waste a moment. Something seemed really off with Ana's lines, and stands out as the only flaw in this otherwise excellent dark comedy. Wonderful, wonderful work.»
«An entertaining story that makes great use of the program and its scene selection. Technically, the recording issue is a bit of a problem and it calls up the importance- for actors and directors- of getting a clean file.
Narratively, I will say the story gets over-explained by the end- there's a lot there that's kind of redundant, and the hardboiled narration sometimes goes over the top too (it's REALLY easy to overdo this, so you have to watch out.) Still, the story works pretty well overall, there's some good humor mixed in, and overall I'm left with a strong favorable impression.»
«This was completely awesome! It was really well written and directed. You managed to fit in a lot of story in just over 10 minutes. I did not really like Lilly's voice overs, but every other voice over was perfect, as was the music. That was one of my favorite short movies I've seen on here in recent memory. Well done. »
«Ha ha, what a good flick you got here. I really enjoy seeing people still use The Movies because it's a great tool to use. Nile did a great job with the narration, the choice of Jazz set the mood, and the story was witty and humorous. I chuckled a few times. I hope to see more films from you in the future and I'd like to see that Wife Strangler get his own movie.»
«Filled to the brim with wit and style. A jazz fueled trip into the life of an asshole and a waitress with a grudge. Damn fine stuff.
As I said, I really liked the style here - the combination of freeze frames and narration is remiscient of what Scorsese did with GoodFellas. The constant MS Paint annonations add a sarcastic sense of wit to balance out the drama.
The direction was excellent, as well - there was some damn fine camerawork on display here. As of late, many people have been talking about the decline in the useage of "the Movies" program on the site - a great film like this will serve as an excellent showcase, to show what the program is still capable of.
The writing is filled with a cynical sense of wit - our self proclaimed asshole narrator views the terrible events with a sense of detached amusement, constantly cracking jokes.
All in all, this is a fine piece of work, perhaps one of the best TM films that I've seen in recent memory.
