«What a twist to Lovecraftian themes!
I enjoyed this one. Very good sound effects and story and use of The Movies tech.
DARK TIDES of INNSMOUTH
«What a twist to Lovecraftian themes!
«After speaking to Joesph I decided to see this movie, I am glad that I have seen it.
Joseph's movies always have meanings, cover topics etc. On this occasion it was about Rasism and Indivisualism.
I think this is a great movie, I will say I wept for the old major of Innsmouth. This story is great, Joseph you never cease to amaze me.
«Wow - Joseph this was amazing. I loved the whole plot about the black man and the comparison you had between him and the 'deep ones' where they were discriminated against because they were different. I didn't tealise until the final credits that Phil was played by A_N_D but what a performance! In fact the same could be said for all the cast. Great job on the animations when the 'deep ones' come out of the water - it was as if they were just another part of the Movies program. Loved how you used MMD's music here - I never would have thought have using The Beautiful Savage in that sort of time period but it worked really, really well. Once again, faultless editing and great cinematography really grips the viewer from start to finish. 5 stars from me (of course).
You were right about how good this film was - I would say it comes second in the list of your all-time best movies behind Extinguished, which is a stunning achievement, since you're bound to be running out of ideas by now.
Thank you for another stunning movie,
«I can't believe I watched this ages ago and never left a comment... bad me!
Outstanding barely covers it... really gets to grips with the whole Lovecraftian philosophy... good adaption; excellent script, first class visuals, top drawer VOs... as a movie, it's about as high a bar to set for a horror movie anyway, but as a Lovecraft movie it simply blows everything out of the water (even Quietus, which is no mean feat in itself, topping that). And then, of course, that ending... perfect, in tune with the whole thing and reaches into the darkest part of the Mythos and pulls out the insiduous effect it has on humanity...
I can't pour enough praise on this, but of course now we're all expecting you to do even better with the next one »
«Have you ever seen The X-Files series? I felt like I was in an episode! Keep up the great work! Heres the only flaw: THERE WERE NO FLAWS! The overlays were stunning, along with the story and acting. This was right up there with Quietus. You bring the digital movies to life, it's incredible. DARK TIDES of INNSMOUTH is a must-see film!»
«Goodness! Yet another Lovecraftian masterpiece Joseph!
I have to say, I enjoyed your animation and thought the new army mod really fit in well.
Such a creepy and deep (forgive the pun ) story. The Innsmouth stories were always appealing to me and you've captured the atmosphere in this 'prequal' very well - I like how we see their point of view for a change!
Well Done Joseph, good luck in the competition!
A terrific story well acted and shot, but not without some flaws.
The audio on the VO for many of the characters didn't seem right. There was a purring sound at the end of most of the lines which grated as the film wore on. I could also distinguish a kind of garbled noise behind some lines, suggesting attempted noise reduction. Noise reduction never works - it's best to EQ the lines by reducing the top frequencies if it hisses too much, or remove the bottom end if it rumbles too much. Or paper over both with music or ambient sound effects. Noise reduction creates an ambient sound that is very alien to most people - it's best avoided if at all possible.
The scene where one of the main characters has a conversation with the beast seemed a bit flat. He seemed completely unperturbed at meeting this beast from the unknown at the outset. I expected he would have been just a little bit scared at least.
But those are the only criticisms really - the subplot with the black man, and the way it related to the main plot, was handled excellently. The story had quite a few twists and turns that easily held my attention through the film's running time.
Add onto that some superb visual effects in places, good sound design and well composed music, used perfectly, and this is what you get...
A very good film indeed.»
«What a film, Joseph, wow!
What a story, great visuals, music, sounds, voiceacting.....
I feel at a loss of words.
Your stories always have a deeper meaning - this is what makes your work so very special. I was drawn so much into this.. time flew.
And I agree with A_N_D - would that you could quit your day job and make movies for the big screen!
Good luck for the competition!»
«Incredibly done. You really managed to keep it very entertaining throughout the movie. I liked on how you've used different styles of camra work. It was somehow very stylish. Also, the suspence billiantly builds up. I was impressed on how wonderfully you've added it on. Perfect casting - I thought that was another thing that impressed me. It seemed you've carefully chosen the characters within the right casting. This was perfessionally made with excellent movie-making skills. Great work - you're up a level in my book!»
«Joseph, congratulations on producing another great film. The story was compelling and I loved how you were able to produce such believable mob and group scenes. When I saw the number of characters in some of the scenes in the script I wondered how you would pull it off. The UT mass army technique worked wonderfully. »
«Joseph, This was simply Brilliant, The Mods, The Cast...The Whole thing was brilliant and well put together. The First movie i saw of yours was Extinguished and it inspired me, but now this has further inspired me, It was incredibly powerful and moving, The Special Effects were Incredible and The Atmosphere was brilliant which kept me interested and The Costumes were simply Fantastic.....Overall this is a fine entry into The H.P Lovecraft Competition and I think it is a potential winner.....Well Done Joseph!»
Nice use of backdrops! I don’t know how you created these backdrops. They really make each scene look very fresh. And how on earth did you create the dusty wind?
Good use of music, excellent VO performances, and nice story telling.
For some reason the video was very jumpy when I was watching this. I hope other people didn’t have the same problem.
«I was lucky enough to see this a little while back, and I must say that it is even better on second viewing! I do have a couple of minor issues with it (such as my own VOs, which sound weird compared to the rest of the cast... but that could be just me). But needless to say, this is a great piece of work by one of the masters of this software.
Oh, and I swear I was hearing the voice of the alien (can't remember his name) from 'Enemy Mine'... great VO work on the Deep Ones!
«Outstanding. Simply outstanding.
Once again you craft a movie that both entertains and has meaning.
A perfect suspense thriller in my book. A beautifully paced tale, building up to as great a denouement as I can remember.
What more can I say? Best of luck in the competition.»
«That ending. Wow. I seriously broke out into goosebumps. That was very powerful. The whole film built up to this perfectly! The acting was very well done here, and I really enjoyed how each character seemed to come to life! The whole thing was, dark, suspenseful, and atmospheric. Oh, the atmosphere! This little place you call Innsmouth had so much of it! The mods you used fit together seamlessly, and you were able to create an entirely new world. The whole town was beautifully crafted. I've never seen something quite like this on TMO...or TMU...or whatever! The special effects were very well done. Sometimes I had to wonder if you were using overlays, or if you were using a scene from the movies that I had not discovered. THAT is impressive. Seriously Joseph, you've got something to be proud of! A well crafted, entertaining, original film that carries a message? How could any sane human being give this anything less than five stars?! And seeing as how I am a sane human being, I have no choice but to give you the five stars that you truly deserve!
Lovecraft would be proud! »
I can't tell you how proud I am to be a part of this amazing production.
I say this with each and every new JKW movie, but each time I say it, I mean it...you have outdone yourself again.
Congratulations my friend and the very best of luck in the contest.»
«Amazing tale with some truly sublime cinematography. I think this is another fine adaptation which was brimming with great visuals and solid substance. I loved your use of angles, colours and special effects to bring this movie to life and once again you show all us TMU'ers what is so special about a lovecraft tale.
Until the next time, Nuke Well by the Tides»
«Not only is this a Lovecraftian tale, but it is also a morality tale. It shows how paranoia and irrational fear (a fear of the unexplainable) can affect a community, no matter how strong it may think it is. Great voice acting (although there was an annoying sound after every VO by one of the VAs) by the entire cast. The sets helped to really draw you into the film. The sound design was just incredible and very creepy (like in your xbox comp entry). A really great film. Best of luck in the Lovecraft festival.»
«Wow - I've long been an admirer of your work, but you really topped yourself with this flick.
A perfect Lovecraft adaptation (though I'm not sure Howie was so open-minded about some things) - as it built to the climax, I was literally on the edge of my seat. Great visuals and use of music to really layer on the atmosphere. The special effects and costuming really made it feel right, and your cast, from leads to one-line actors, were outstanding.
Good luck in the comp - as admirable as I've found the other entries, this one really brings it home in every way»
