JESUS VS EASTER Moviestorm Edition
«Can't believe this is the first time I've seen the remake.. Unfortunately in a way I've got to agree with Jazz. Technically this was worlds better but because of the timing, etc, I just didn't find this anywhere near as funny as the original. The outtakes were hilarious though so that's why I'm still giving you 5 stars lol
Best of luck for Best Comedy in the Ollies »
In the beginning was darkness - then came the titles glowing white in the void.
And underneath, some good gags written in very small lettering and going by far too quickly later on - one for the DVD pausers! (to even understand how funny this is, full screen viewing is essential)
Then the film opens.
Having watched the original countless times, there are certain things I expect from a remake:
1) Just as snappy with the lines - maybe even better timing, a couple of embellishments and improvements perhaps
2) Superior graphics and picture quality
3) Better music
4) Better in other technical areas
The answer to number 1 is "no".
The comedic timing of the lines in this version is well off and well under-paced, not just compared to the bright and breezy original, but by most comedic standards. I was yawning through the first section, there was no off-beatness. My metronome timed this section at a roughly constant 80 beats per minute [a world first - I never get my metronome out unless I can feel a relentless pulse going on]. Monty Python is a huge influence on this movie - but I fear the main influence on this version is the "conversation restaurant" in "The Meaning of Life". That's how stilted this dialogue threatened to become on occasion.
I liked the Sari ruined by Jesus's wine though!
2) Picture quality? Yes - but I found these animations to be much more wooden than The Movies - the facial expressions weren't as dramatic, and that's a must in most comedy (although early Moviestorm comedy classics such as "The Clarks" show that it can work). So I couldn't even get my chuckles from an OTT facial expression either.
3) Yes - the music was a lot better - the dramatic opening titles were very good in this regard.
4) Well - it was technically better shot, the Jesus "beaming-down" moments were well done as was the close-up work.
But, in terms of laughs, there weren't many.
Am I being cruel? Someone who hadn't seen the original would think this was a good comedy, yes?
Maybe - but I did one final test. I watched this movie, then the original. I laughed alot during the original, proving that the same jokes still do work for me. It's down to the comic timing and performances. The material is as funny as ever, but poor editing of the lines and flat imitations of the original characters have resulted in a film which, while technically proficient in some areas, seems to be going through the motions where it matters most.»
«I loved the original one. It's one of those movies you never quite forget. Watching this remake made me remember excactly why. This is f***ed up absurd but oh so freaking funny. The fancy effects and brilliant new look was a nice surprise that made it even better.
«Hahah, nice stuff man! However sir, I take offense to the derogatory use Jelly beans, I come from a strong jelly bean background and we take great pride in our history and culture and do not take kindly to having it insulted so. I have contacted the NAAJB (National Association for the Advancement of Jelly Beans) and they will be contacting you soon. (this will not end well............
«When I first saw the original JESUS VS EASTER movie on TMO, I really enjoyed it, but THIS, this is more better than the first one. Moviestorm has made the movie more funnier and more awesome. Like I keep thinking to myself, you sir, are the master of comedy. One of the best comedies I've seen so far for 2009. Good job, Mefune. 100 out of 100. Heck, I can't stop laughing.»
«Wow. A worthy remake to possibly the funniest short film I've ever run across. Loved the whole Monty Python bit at the beginning. I was was laughing out loud. The only criticism I could possibly think of was that, once or twice, the timing was a bit fast, but that may have made the movie even funnier. Overall, a perfect 5/5!»
«Outstanding humour and execution makes this a faithful re-make. You have a talent to entertain and bring smiles and laughter to peoples face and that is a gift I know you will continue to deliver. It was great seeing you explore with the MS engine and it's final product was something to be marvelled at. Excellent work!!!»
«Wonderful...just wonderful, this just shows and confirms that you ARE the king of comedy on TMU. Everything was just amazing about this...and it all began with those hilarious opening credits just like off MP's Holy Grail, that was just brilliant and of course the rest of it which was just sublime...the whole cast (excluding me) did great and the directing was wonderful, and to think that this is your first MovieStorm movie...it just shows how quick you can adapt to a new software and command it to your liking!...This was just a classic piece of machinama which I was honoured to be a part of and I thank you for that bro, you really are a great director and friend!
